DaVinci Institute's Night with a Futurist: Advanced Transportation

DaVinci Institute's Night with a Futurist: Advanced Transportation

The vast majority of people move around in their own cars or by using public transportation. Add in hire cars, bicycles and walking and that’s the vast majority of local transportation options. Going further? Then you’re on a plane or perhaps taking the train.

But the future of transportation is about sustainable transport options, and many of these opportunities are within our grasp. From autonomous vehicles to all electric cars, smarter and more responsive public transit and the evolution of the workplace, moving around in 20 years is going to be quite different.

We invite you to join Dr. R. Paul Williamson and Geophysicist Rutt Bridges on a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation on the future of transportation and how we can replace our 100+ year old infrastructure with transit modalities that are safer, faster and much greener.

Dr. R. Paul Williamson

Dr. R. Paul Williamson retired from a 40+ higher education career that included academic deanships, executive vice presidencies directorships and research and development positions at colleges and universities throughout the country.  His career has highlighted technological development and programming inclusive of cutting edge innovation and future vision.

After finishing his book “Winning the Energy Wars, A Sustainable Energy Plan for America’s Future”, Dr. Williamson moved on to oversee Sustainable Systems of Colorado and helped establish the Sustainable Smart Home Living Learning Center in Superior, CO.  He continues to also seek testing, certification and demonstration of a hydrogen powered, magnetic levitation personal rapid transit systems.

Rutt Bridges

Rutt Bridges grew up in South Georgia and earned a BS in physics and an MS in geophysical sciences from Georgia Tech. He currently serves on Georgia Tech’s College of Sciences Advisory Board and the Securing America’s Energy Future Driverless Vehicle Task Force. Rutt is a past chair of Colorado Public Radio, past vice-chair of the CU Foundation, and past-president of the 30,000-member Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He founded Colorado's Bighorn Center for Public Policy, and later briefly ran for U.S. Senate. Since exiting a successful analytics software startup three years ago, Rutt has focused on research to better understand the economic and social impact of disruptive innovations.

Rutt Bridges’ new e-book, “Driverless Car Revolution”, concludes that an Uber-like service can promptly and profitably deliver reliable transportation for 30 cents per mile for a single passenger and 15 cents per mile each for two passengers. This is less than half the cost of personal car ownership and less than one-quarter if sharing the ride. It is also significantly less expensive than public buses. These vehicles will offer clean and comfortable, 24/7 door-to-door service. Initial testing shows that driverless vehicles are also far safer and will likely save tens of thousands of lives every year in America alone. However, they will be very disruptive for the automotive industry, oil industry, mass transit, and potentially entire nations.
